We know that the only way to end homelessness is by creating more housing. Umpqua Heart is looking to take people completely out of the homeless market. We will do this by offering home ownership, and rental options through tiny homes. These units will have many of the conveniences of a traditional home like: electricity, running water, heating and cooling, and septic. However, we will be encompassing a model of being green and clean energy by offering a majority of the electricity through solar power, grey water mitigation, and utilizing self-composting toilets. Citizens will become eligible for these units once sustainability to support these homes is reached. We also aim to use these homes as a relief valve for those families, who have school age children, who become homeless during the school year. Single residents or families, will be able to obtain these homes through sweat equity and peer mentorship work programs offered by local Douglas County contractors, lease-to-own options, or a combination of both. These homes will be on a foundation, be part of a subdivision community, and be part of a homeowners association. Occupants will be able to live in these homes as long as they choose to be part of the community. Once home ownership is obtained they must continue to pay a homeownership association fee. Occupants who choose to move, must sell back the residence to Umpqua Heart, will receive market value in the form of a lump sum amount that they can use toward their next residence, and then the unit will be offered to the next villager. This option, plus extended case management and peer mentorship, is the best option for creating long-term self-sufficiency, and we are very excited to be the first to offer it in Douglas County. Each of these tiny homes will cost close to $25,000 dollars to create. There are two options: single individual or couple 8.5 feet by 16 feet, and 8.5 feet by 20 feet for a family.
This is a way to show how big your heart is by offering a home to someone in need. This shelter is an 8 foot by 10 foot shelter that has a door that locks, window, twin bed, storage, and a 200w solar system, with inverter, that will offer adequate electricity to charge devices and run a small appliance. These CHU's (contained housing units) are designed to aid those who have made the decision to move forward, by surrounding all partnered service providers to support a successful transition to self-sustainability. All sponsors will receive annual updates on all transitions and are encouraged to volunteer in the mentorship process. Strong support grows strong communities.
Communities are built by wonderful people who are helpful and kind
Ten of these and we have a new home. This is a very exciting time in a person's life. This is something that many never get the chance of feeling. Feeling that safety and security is a major step in life. All Gold Sponsors will have their sponsorship posted on the property, and will receive annual updates on how their contributions help in successfully transitioning a person, couple, or family into self-sustainability.
Five of these and we have ourselves a new place for someone. We appreciate all the support we have received from our local communities. Silver sponsorships will be added together to build a CHU. All donations will be posted on that property, and will be updated annually on the lives that were helped in the transition process
This initiative is about creating community, and we would not be able to do this without you. We thank you for you contribution, and you will receive annual updates on how your contribution has changed lives.
